CABLE MODEMS

  • SHARE THE FEED

A cable modem gives you incredible access to the internet, but why waste it?   If you have several computers that you wish could have access to the Net, create a local network.

There are a few hardware items required.  Each system needs a network card that connects to a hub (a distribution box) with Cat 5 cabling (a specific type of cable).   The hub gets connected to the system with the cable modem.  This setup requires a special program, such as Nevod's NAT 1000, to route the cable network to the other machines connected to the local network.  An added bonus: all your computers are now networked together for printer and file sharing.

  • SEND AND RECEIVE FROM THAT FEED

If your choose to share the feed and still wish to send and receive email on the remote system(s) [not the computer directly connected to the modem] you need to set the POP3 and the SMTP servers correctly.

POP3 for Comcast: netmail.home.com

SMTP for Comcast: mail.etntwn1.nj.home.com (where etntwn1.nj equals your local system server)
